Roy Morgan State of the Nation Report 24 focuses on Australian Politics and the fortunes of the Coalition Government as it heads towards re-election at this year's Federal Election.

After just under two years of Prime Minister Tony Abbott, the Coalition switched leaders in September 2015 and installed former Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull in the top job.

The date for this year's Federal Election was set early, as early as possible given the electoral laws and regulations, but an unusual Winter election awaits Australians on the first Saturday of July.

It hasn't all been smooth sailing for the Turnbull Govenrment, but does the Coalition team have what it takes to claim victory at this year's Federal Election and secure a second term?

Despite the troubles of the Rudd-Gillard Government of 2007-2010, it remains a fact that no Australian Government has been 'turfed out' after its first term of Government since the Great Depression in the early 1930s.

As we approach this year’s Federal Election the key issues facing the Government include unemployment and under-employment across Australia, the slowing Australian economy caused by the slowdown in China and the falling price of commodities including iron ore, coal and gas – Australia’s biggest exports, healthcare reforms, the Government’s proposed revamp of the education sector, the aging of Australia as highlighted by the Intergenerational Report, asylum seeker policy, and perhaps most prominently – extensive reform of Australia’s Taxation system.

It'd have to be a significant possibility given the lower thresholds required to get elected to the Senate when 12 spots are up for grabs in each State rather than 6 at a traditional half-Senate Election.
